A career in Speech and Hearing Science

Listen carefully...your career is waiting.

  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics1, demand for speech pathologists will increase 39% through 2010.

If that’s not enough career motivation, consider this:

  • Speech-language pathology and audiology will be among the hottest professions in the country in the next decade2.

What do these professionals do?

Speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, fluency, and other related disorders.

On the other hand, audiologists are hearing care specialists who provide evaluation and treatment for individuals with hearing and balance impairments.

Where do they work?

Speech-language pathologists and audiologists can be found working in private practices, child development centers, preschools, middle and high schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, government agencies, health units, colleges and universities, and research centers throughout the world.

So how do I get there?

It begins with the Department of Speech and Hearing Science. The Department lays a solid foundation and prepares you for advanced degrees you can obtain at Ohio State or elsewhere to fulfill your career goals. We provide:

  • One-on-one academic advising every step of the way
  • Honors programs to advance your study and Honors thesis opportunities
  • Volunteer and internship options in clinics both on and off campus
